I also received an email from Democrat Ben Stuckart who has declared his candidacy for 2018 primary election to run for the 5th Congressional District seat to run in the 2018 general election against McMorris .  Ben is currently the President of the Spokane City Council.  He was first elected in 2011 and was re-elected in 2015.

Friend,
I believe that big money should have no place in politics.  Our government must be of the people, by the people, and for the people – otherwise we descend into tyranny.
That’s why last year I was a statewide co-sponsor of Initiative 1464.  I partnered with the League of Women Voters and the Seattle Tea Party on the Initiative.
I believe in looking across the aisle and working with others to get things done.  I-1464 would have made Washington’s elections system far more transparent and fair, instituting a “democracy voucher” system to dilute the influence of big money. Unfortunately, I-1464 failed, achieving 46.29% of the vote.
In Congress, I’m committed to fighting for campaign finance reform.  Whether or not politicians are corrupt, the prevalence of massive donations gives the appearance of corruption.
I refuse to be bought and sold by anyone. That’s why, more than ever, I’m going to need your help to win this thing.
I’ve already received over 50 grassroots contributions in the past few days – this is how we’re going to win! My opponent will rake in millions, as she always does.  I’m not looking for millions, I’m just looking for your support.
Your friend,
Ben

Sutherland Vies for Chance against Cathy

I got this email from, Matthew Sutherland, one of the Democrats who has declared his intent to run in 2018 for the Democratic primary for the 5th Congressional District, and, thus, the honor of running against Cathy McMorris Rodgers in the general election.

It’s become clearer with each passing day Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to our national security.  Enabled by Congressional Republicans like our very own Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Trump repeatedly puts classified information at risk and jeopardizes the lives of our agents abroad despite warnings from our dedicated and hard-working intelligence agencies.

Trump viewed a North Korean missile test at an open-air table in the ballroom of Mar-a-Lago. There was such a lack of security that another visitor was able to take pictures of the event and post them to Facebook.

On May 10, Trump violated our national security in an unprecedented way, giving code-word level information to the Russian Foreign Minister and Ambassador during an Oval Office meeting that only Russian media was allowed to cover; U.S. news sources were shut out. This information came from an ally who trusted us to take proper measures to ensure their agent’s data would remain secure.

Our President defied every norm in dealing with classified intelligence by handing it over without consent to a rival power that potentially meddled in our elections and works against us all over the globe.

Trump’s first National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, was decorated and paid by the Russian government before being given the position.  As if it wasn’t already evident he was unfit for his position, Flynn broke American law by attempting to manipulate American foreign policy as a private citizen before taking his role as National Security Advisor.

Cathy McMorris Rodgers is another Trump crony.

She backs him on every issue the administration pushes, regardless of whether the action is in the best interests of the people in her district.  Courageous representatives on both sides of the aisle have made statements calling Trump’s actions into question, except her.

She has still not spoken on the lack of judgment shown by Trump regarding both Flynn and the classified information given to the Russian ambassador. She hasn’t commented on the fact that only Russian media outlets were allowed into the meeting in the Oval Office. Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ words don’t match her actions in any way.

She is clearly working for Trump’s agenda; why isn’t she working for ours?

If you elect me to Congress, I will do my duty to ensure the vital role Congress plays as a check on Trump’s executive power is fulfilled. I have spent my entire adult life in service, as a soldier and as an activist for causes I believe in.

Unlike Cathy McMorris Rodgers, I have the backbone to stand beside the representatives who have called for an independent investigation from the very start. I have the strength of character to call for Trump’s impeachment if and when the facts support it. With your support, I can go to D.C. to replace a representative who doesn’t care what you think, who doesn’t care what our values or ideals are, and who doesn’t care that our President is putting us all in danger.

I can’t do this without you.

I need you to get involved and help me resist the slow erosion of American institutions and values by Trump and Congressional leadership like Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

Thank you for your support,
Matt
